For the most part, the concept of vegetarianism in China is somewhat novel, so veggies must try not to be too surprised or offended if the locals, particularly those who are over the age of forty, chortle at the idea. This is perhaps a result of such recent famine in the country.

Having said this, China’s rapid development over recent years, and the Chinese peoples’ desire to embrace Western culture, means that in larger, more developed cities, it’s becoming easier and easier to find not only restaurants willing to cater for vegetarians, but restaurants which cater exclusively for vegetarians.
